A REPORT BY RON HIGGINS ABOUT
                                      THE INAUGURAL STINKY CREEK 2004

As "Festival Coordinator" I have to say that it was an "Amazing" weekend . Absolutely wonderful turn up for all the 'feature'
events - & far too many memorable moments to mention more than a few. We did a quick "Exit survey" which highlighted a
few things -
- EVERYONE wanted it to happen again !

"Lovely atmosphere; warm reception; good food; lovely people"

"Saturday night - Awesome ! ; Workshops - Fantastic !; Highlights ? - too many to mention !"

" Best thing to happen in Lincoln for years !"

" The Best thing to ever come to Port Lincoln - was the Ryebuck Sheilas " - from Jack - now in 'love' with 8 amazing, vibrant
& talented Adelaide women !

(& from one of the 'Sheilas' - "Great interaction at Bush dance (The Sat. night "Ceilidh") between locals & Sheilas - Hope it
can become more than a once a Year event !"

"Just not enough time to play music with you great Lincoln Folk !"

One kid wrote : (How did you find out about the Stinky Creek Folk Festival ?) - "From Dad !" - & his
Highlights: - "Food; Music, Dancing, Pepole (sic.)"

"Very well organized - very Welcoming !" "... Out of all the different festivals I've been to this Year 'Stinky Creek' has been
my favourite !!!"

(Highlight ?) -"The Ryebuck Sheilas"" (Low-light ?) - ".. too short ! "

"The 'Singing for pleasure workshop' with Dave & Kathy was brilliant - truly inspirational !"

(Highlight ?) "It was ALL amazing !" (age - 50s, but only just !!)
(Highlights ?) - "Too many !"

"Spontaneous combining of people performing together - was incredible !"
"Please have it again next Year "

"Friendly atmosphere, Friendly people - Thanks to all the organizers !"
(Low- light ?) - "getting up early on Sunday Morning ! - but it was worth it !"
"Presentations - very good !"

(Ron) - need I say anymore ?
It was a huge job for a few willing people (As usual) - but thanks to a great "Cellar Folk Club" Committee - it developed from
what was originally a "Mini Folk Festival" - into a "Huge" success - heaps of people joining together for an "Inspirational
"Singing for Pleasure workshop with Dave Clark & Kathy Townsend, from the "Singing Gallery'' in Adelaide (Mclaren Vale)
(over 70 participants 'singing their hearts out' - mostly non-singers/ non-performers) ;

a huge turn up for the Saturday night Ceilidh (over 140) witnessed a superb concert & danced to the music of the wonderful
"Ryebuck Sheilas", from Adelaide. Several of the "Acts" comprised people who had only met at the weekend EG "The Suzy
Grosser Trio !" - Suzy from the ABC + Ian McDowell from the Adelaide hills & Leigh Newton from Ceduna ! ; a superb set
from "Mindi" (David Crombie) & Friends; "Seanachi" from Whyalla ; "Rum & Raspberry"(Dave Clark & Kathy Townsend);
Adrienne Eccles & Peter Day -superb musicians from Adelaide ; & EVERYBODY Loved "The Sheilas " !!

Informal Acoustic singing & music sessions around the fireplace in the Lions "shed" were a highlight for many - & a chance
for many "Non-performers" to "have a go !"

& "A night at the Cellar" - Sunday night at Boston House to a capacity crowd has been described by some seasoned "Folk club
goers" as the "Best night of Folk Music they've ever seen !" - amazing diversity - superb performances, by locals & visitors
alike (M/C Anne Roberts having to enforce a "2 song limit" on each act to get them all in !) & some wonderful contributions to
the "President's Challenge" - a new song or poem containing various words including "Stinky Creek", tin whistle, cake, dance,
workshops (& the hardest) clubbing - all written on a piece of paper no bigger than 10 x 15 cms ! - Wilbur Klien (from
Cockaleechi) was judged the winner with a superb lively & very original effort.

Other highlights included - on a sunny, Sunday afternoon - some stirring sea shanties down at the Axel Stenross museum with
local group "Nelson's Blood" & Dave Clark & other visitors attracting a record crowd into the museum

Smaller informal "Classes" for beginners in Tin whistle & button accordion & demonstrations of the Appalachian Mountain
Dulcimer, The Autoharp & The Mediaeval "Hurdy Gurdy" also proved popular.

2 special "Kids sessions" were also held with Dave Clark & his Tipi, on Saturday, & Annie ("Ryebuck Sheila") Thornton on
Sunday

The whole weekend was nicely "rounded off" by Dave Clark & his "Tea & Damper Club" - with some rousing Australian folk
songs, stories from other lands & some real damper & "Cockies Joy" to enjoy.

Thanks must go to the Lion's Club for the use of their North Shield facilities & to Country Arts SA who sponsored the
weekend

Thanks to everyone involved in the weekend - organizers, helpers, performers & participants - it was indeed a memorable,
"Inaugural Stinky Creek Folk Festival" - & will be hard to top in succeeding years - but I think we'll just have to try !!
